Batteries are definitely a product that can either make you or break you in photography (especially in cold weather conditions). Although I’m in sunny Southern California and don’t really need to worry about “cold” weather it’s still good to have extra batteries around for multiple reasons like:

  • Batteries go bad: You generally know when this happens because your battery stops charging, doesn’t hold a charge as long or you get random camera errors.
  • Lost battery: You’d be surprised, I’ve switched batteries during jobs and in the rush I leave batteries behind.
  • Multiple camera bags: Some photographers have multiple camera bags and instead of worrying about moving small things around they just have an extra sets in each bag.
  • Camera features: Newer cameras have a lot of really great features like WiFi that LOVE to suck up your battery juice.

The problem with most OEM DSLR batteries is that they’re expensive. For instance, the LP-E6 battery (compatible with the EOS 5D Mark II and III, 6D, 7D, 60D, 60Da and the 70D) runs between $50- $70 depending on where you buy it. I’m not an OEM purist as long as it gets the job done and a company that I found on Amazon called ‘Wasabi Power’ makes fantastic replacement batteries. I’ve purchased 6 of these batteries and I haven’t had a problem with any. They have packages with 2 batteries that run around $30 which include a charger but a single battery can be as low at $15. The included charger takes around the same amount of time as the OEM charger to give you a full charge and is nice and compact. Some packages even include a car adapter and a European adapter for the provided charger. Wasabi doesn’t only have batteries for DSLRs, though, they carry batteries for point-and-shoot cameras, external battery packs, and even batteries for GoPro cameras. It’s a great deal if you’re on a budget and I can’t recommend these enough.

If you decide to but some of the LP-E6 batteries or want to search Amazon to see if Wasabi makes batteries for your device, please use my affiliate link by clicking on one of the images below. I’ll get a modest commission from Amazon that will help keep the lights on here. 🙂
